Community Housing Options and Support

1900 Sheppard Transitional Housing Program

A Community of Young Mothers located, one intersection from Jane and Sheppard. Abiona Centre, in collaboration with Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), provides 27 rent-geared-to-income (RGI) units. Twenty-three (one-bedroom units) and four (two-bedroom units) are available to young parenting mothers aged 16-24, with a maximum stay of up to four years in our building.

Clients must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Young mothers aged 16-24 who are the primary caregivers (would have had their first child by the age of 19)
• Homeless or under-housed
• On waitlist with Access to Housing Toronto (potential clients will be assisted in their applications if necessary and appropriate)
• Demonstrate a financial need
• Applicant should be working or enrolled in a full-time or part-time program (training, trades, school, etc.)
• Demonstrate the ability to live independently
• Willing to participate in case management, monthly tenant meetings, quarterly service plans and workshops facilitated by Abiona Centre or in collaboration with partners.

Young Parent Community Housing Project

Young Parent Community Housing Program (YPCHP) is an 8-unit rent geared to income (RGI) property managed and owned by Abiona Centre. Located near Christie Street and St. Clair Avenue, YPCHP is part of a Transitional Housing Program run by Abiona Centre in partnership with the City of Toronto and Access to Housing. The maximum stay is two years.

Clients must meet the following criteria:

• Single mothers aged 16-24 years who are the primary caregivers of their children
• Children must be under the age of seven.
• Homeless or under-housed
• On waitlist with Access to Housing Toronto (potential clients will be assisted in their applications if necessary and appropriate)
• Demonstrate a financial need
• Applicant should be working or enrolled in a full-time or part-time program (training, trades, school, etc.)
• Demonstrate the ability to live independently
• Willing to participate in case management, monthly tenant meetings, quarterly service plans and workshops facilitated by Abiona Centre or in collaboration with partners.

Baby and Me: Our Home Program

This program aims to help young mothers find and keep permanent housing at an apartment of their choice in the City of Toronto. The program includes:

• Housing workshops
• Support to search and visit housing listings
• Monthly rental subsidies of up to $800 (while funding is available)
• Referrals to community resources
• Other support services

Clients must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Pregnant or parenting single mothers aged 16-24 years who are the primary caregivers of their children
• Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident Status in Canada
• Homeless or under-housed
• Demonstrate a financial need
• Demonstrate the ability to live independently
• Willing to participate in case management, monthly check-ins, home visits and workshops facilitated by Abiona Centre or in collaboration with partners.
